Spring Self-Care Tips

1

Let’s face it, winter here can be brutal. So many cold, dreary, gray days. My family spends all of winter in hockey rinks so you better believe I am ready to welcome spring with open arms! This season marks not only a change in the weather but also a shift in priorities. It’s during this time that I begin to reassess those priorities and start making mental notes of all the tasks that have been neglected during the long winter months.

One thing, especially as a mom, that often takes a backseat amidst the chaos of daily life is self-care. Like all mothers, I’ve become accustomed to prioritizing the needs of others above my own. However, since attending a few wellness workshops this year, I have designed a shift in my perspective, and I am motivated to make self-care a non-negotiable part of my routine.

Self-care for some people can be a daunting task. You think, “I don’t have the energy or time for that” or “It’s not in our budget.” Guess what, self-care does not have to cost a thing!

When I think of self-care I think of three things: physical, mental, and emotional wellness. Move my body, clear my head, and find joy in everyday things. Seems easy enough right? Not exactly. It’s so easy to get caught up in the everyday chaos. Organized or not, for mothers, the chaos has a permanent home in our brains. It’s a constant shuffle of schedules, household chores, and workloads. I don’t know about you, but I can’t carry the heavy mental load all the time, so this spring I am making an effort to prioritize self-care!

Below are three self-care tips that we can prioritize this spring:

Find your movement

Move your body. It doesn’t require much. It can be as simple as taking a walk for 15-30 minutes alone with a good podcast or a good playlist or asking a friend to join! For me, I prefer carving out an hour every morning to take a high-intensity workout class at Upperkuts Boxing Club in Ashland. There are some days when I prefer yoga or a walk with a friend. I find that prioritizing my movement helps me clear my head.

Prioritize creativity

It’s scientifically proven to reduce anxiety and stress! Be creative. Find an outlet. As moms, we can get lost in the shuffle. It’s time to put yourself on the top of the list. What sparks joy for you? Painting? Writing? Doing arts & crafts with your kids? Always wanted to take a cake decorating class or learn calligraphy? Do it.

Connect with your loved ones

Connect with the important people in your life. Whether it’s a coffee date with a friend, a leisurely walk with your spouse, or a casual dinner with family, prioritize your relationships. These moments will fill you with love, and purpose and will ease your stress and anxiety.

So this spring, let’s commit to prioritizing self-care in all its forms – from moving our bodies to unleashing our creativity to nurturing our relationships. Remember, self-care isn’t selfish – it’s essential. And by taking care of ourselves, we’re better able to show up for others and make a positive impact in the world around us. Here’s to a season of growth, renewal, and self-love. Let’s make it count!

  1. […] Self-Care. It’s a word that gets thrown around a lot. We’re told it’s important and that we should make time for it. As a mother though, we are already balancing so many things – too many things! How are we supposed to make time for something else? Hence a lot of “self-care” suggestions for moms are things like “take a shower by yourself.” Now, as a mother, I fully agree that showering by yourself is good for the soul. However, showering by yourself is something that is taken for granted by the rest of the non-mothering world and the bottom line is, we deserve better. You deserve it, Mama. […]
