You Are A Great Mom Even When You Think You Aren’t

Being a mom isn’t easy. There are no instructions. No manual to read. Sure, there are a lot of books about becoming a mom, but all those how-to’s don’t always perfectly apply to our lives. No matter how many blog posts or Instagram stories we read, every motherhood journey is different and unique.

Becoming a mother wasn’t easy for me. After struggling with infertility for over a year and a half, I was so disappointed when I was met with postpartum. After having a child I wanted more than anything in life, I struggled with feelings of knowing that I was worthy of her love. How could I possibly be a great mom when I was having these thoughts and feelings?

“Night night mama. Love you!” I love hearing those words from her as I close her door, and walk away at night. But this time a few tears roll down my face. We stayed inside today while I looked at images of all the millions of things other moms did. And I ask myself did we do enough today? Maybe, maybe not. Some days go better than others. As I walk down the stairs, I sit and ask myself – am I a good mom? Am I worthy of her love? I may not feel like a good mom, but those sweet words from my toddler at the end of the day remind me that I am.

This is just a small reminder, mama, that you are a great mom even when you think you aren’t. No matter what season of motherhood you are currently in. At the end of the day, we are all forging our own paths trying to make the best choices and decisions.

To the overstimulated mom

You are a great mother, giving your child the tight squeeze that you may need more than they do. Hug them for as long as you can, for someday those hugs won’t come as easily as they do now.

To the tired mom

You are a great mother, cuddling and asking your child about their day while you lay on the couch. They’ll remember how you took the time to hear everything they had to say.

To the touched-out mom

You are a great mother, letting your child figure out the world around them while you take a break for a few minutes. You’re helping your little one develop imagination and learn problem-solving skills while giving yourself the few minutes you need to reset.

To those feeling like a mom-poster

You are a great mother, and you’re doing the best you can! Remember that it may look like others have it all together, but you’re only seeing a small snippet of their lives. Social media always shows the good, never the bad.

To all the moms out there, somewhere reading this, you are a great mom! The fact that you are here reading this, wondering if you are a good mom, is proof enough to show what a great mom you are. Believe in yourself. I promise you, you’re doing better than you think you are!
