Benefits of Live Theater for Kids

0

Central Mass is home to a variety of Community Theaters. I have had the privilege of working with many of them and have made wonderful relationships. Central Mass’ community theater scene has a lot to offer and can help with your child’s social-emotional development. There are just so many benefits of live theater for kids.

These theaters were hit hard and lost a ton of revenue during the Covid-19 pandemic. Many of these theaters are not-for-profits and are struggling to get back up and running. I truly believe all kids should experience live theater at some point, whether on the stage, backstage or as an audience member.

Benefits of Live Theater for Kids

Self Confidence

Performance art teaches kids to trust their own ideas and abilities and will set them up for success. Performers must take risks, and the benefits are always worth the risk.

Imagination and Creativity

In this plugged-in world, kids need an outlet for creative expression. Live theater teaches kids to use and enhance their imagination and creativity.

Communication and Empathy

Theater is all about verbal and non-verbal expression. It helps kids to learn about emotions and how to express and regulate those emotions. Acting also teaches kids to understand others’ emotions and helps them to gain a new perspective.

Collaboration and Teamwork

A live production is created by an incredibly diverse team. The on-stage performers not only have to work with each other. They also must learn to collaborate with the backstage crew, the tech team, the production team, and a whole slew of volunteers.

Concentration and Problem Solving

Whether you are on stage, backstage or a supportive player, live theater will always throw you a curveball. Theater teaches kids to be aware of their surroundings and adapt accordingly.

There are truly so many benefits and it creates such a wonderful environment for the surrounding community. I hope every child has the opportunity to participate in live theater at some point!
