Simple Self-Care Strategies for Working Moms

0

Up until the last couple of years, I never really saw the true importance of self-care. I felt the stereotypical stigma that “self-care is selfish.” As a mom and wife, I was always putting them, especially my son, before myself. Now, don’t get me wrong, he is still my number 1, but it is also very important for us moms to take care of ourselves, too. Life is busy, fast-paced, has up-and-downs, and is challenging and exciting, all at the same time. After years of therapy, I realize that it is critical that we carve out the time in our complicated lives to care for our needs, too. I realized that I need to be “good” to be “better” for my son and family.

Here are some simple self-care strategies for working moms that you can try to help keep yourself mentally (and physically) healthy:

Listening

Listening to music can be very beneficial for relaxation and decompression. The music that I listen to is not for everyone, but the louder the better for me. I might even bust a move while listening to my favorite songs. During bedtime and evening hours, it is not my typical “daytime” music, but quieter and more soothing. For car rides, I also enjoy listening to podcasts.

Even just calling a friend that I haven’t spoken to in a while energizes me and makes me feel refreshed. It is always like picking up where we left off.

Watching

After a mentally busy day, I enjoy watching my favorite shows, and sometimes we’ll put on a movie.

Reading

Pick up a good book, magazine, or novel and find your cozy spot.

Nutrition

Nutrition is another very important factor in self-care. It is easier for a lot of people on the go to get a quick meal, and this often means fast food. Of course, some fast-food options are healthier than others, but if the time allows, and you enjoy being in the kitchen, try making a new recipe for the family. Eat the colors of the rainbow to get different nutrients.

Water

Water is known for helping with anxiety, whether it is in it, near it, or drinking it. Try a new pond, lake, or beach spot for your next water submersion. Even after taking a shower, I feel restored and like I have been reset.

Exercising

Exercise is one of those things that many people enjoy but often have a hard time squeezing it in between work and their child’s activities. Most days, I go out for at least a walk during my lunch break at work.

I also like to find videos on YouTube since I am not a gym-goer. There are so many workout options on YouTube, from lengths of videos to workout type, and usually the videos offer different variations for workout ability.

I have an at-home desk job, so I feel more focused when going from meeting to meeting when I have a “stretch break” and do some gentle stretches of my arms, side body, and legs.

Sleep

Sleep patterns can fluctuate from person to person, but sleep helps to rest the mind and body and reset for the next day. The recommended number of hours of sleep varies depending on age, but most adults should try to get 7-9 hours of sleep each night.

Hobby

Being involved in a hobby, or exploring a new one, is a great way to care for self needs. Whether it is painting, singing, dancing, puzzles, or outdoor activities, there are a lot of different possibilities.

Spa

Some people enjoy spa time as ME time. This can be getting a mani or pedi, facial, or massage. I enjoy getting massages, and I can always tell when I need one when my shoulders get hard and tense from stress.

Socialization

I am a very extroverted and social person. My at-home desk job limits my social time with my friends, but I have a set few friends that I try to meet for dinner or an event. These “Moms Night Out” are a great way to catch up, get a nice meal, and have a chance to get dressed up. Whenever I have a night out on my calendar, it gives me something to look forward to.

Obviously, not all these self-care tips are for everyone. When self-care happens, and what it is, looks different for everyone. Make sure that you utilize your self-care needs daily, even if it is just 5 minutes here and there. Practicing your self-care needs daily helps to navigate the more challenging times and harder days more easily. Self-care is NOT selfish. You NEED and DESERVE time for yourself. YOU GOT THIS!
