If your kid is anything like mine, they want to get right up there in the kitchen, “helping” with all the cooking and baking going on. Involving your children in making the food that they are going to eat gives them a sense of pride and ownership, as well as developing a number of fine and gross motor skills. Plus, mention that making treats is fun!
Here are a few simple, fun Halloween treats to make together with your kids this spooky season:
Spooky Fingers
Grab a packet of shortbread cookie dough (or make your own from scratch) and break off chunks. Roll them into finger shapes and add a couple of creases with a knife for the knuckles. A little raspberry jam on the tip to attach a slivered almond, and there you have it! Try dying the cookie dough green to get a little witchy.
Graveyard Pudding Cups
Make up a batch of chocolate pudding and mix in a bunch of crushed up Oreos (your kiddo will love smashing the Oreos in a ziplock with a rolling pin). Spoon out into plastic cups and sprinkle some more Oreo dirt on top. Decorate gummy worms and other spooky candy. You can make gravestones by using premade chocolate moulds or covering wafer cookies in chocolate and writing on them with a fine tip piping bag or edible decorating pen. Try not to eat all the candy before it gets in the pudding cups!
Zombie Mouths
Cut some apples into slices and spread peanut butter or a similar spread on the inner flesh to act as glue. Get creative with what you will use for the teeth. Mini marshmallows, goldfish, and almonds will all make great teeth! Put two of these together, and tada, you have a zombie’s mouth—bonus points for pictures of your kids with these in their mouths.
Spider Cookies & Cupcakes
Grab any old cookie or cupcake and give it a spooky makeover with a spider! Cut a chocolate truffle, like Lindor, in half to use as the spider’s body. A few licorice strings or chocolate lines for spider legs. Add some candy eyes with a bit of melted chocolate, and you have a perfect little add-on treat. It’s that simple!
Ice Cube Eyes
If you have ice cube spheres, try popping in a blueberry before freezing. Place a bunch in the bottom of your glass and fill it up with your favourite fizzy drink to make it look like a creepy potion!
