Memorial Day Weekend always sneaks up on us. One minute we’re still packing sweatshirts for sports practices, and the next we’re trying to figure out how to kick off summer in a way that feels fun, but not overwhelming.
The good news is that living in Central Mass means you’re perfectly positioned for some of the best weekend escapes in New England, with no flights, no complicated planning, and no long travel days required.
Here are some of my favorite easy, family-friendly Memorial Day weekend getaways within two hours, which is just perfect for starting summer off right.
Cape Cod (1.5 to 2 hours)
If you want that “we made it to summer” feeling, Cape Cod is it. Early season is actually one of the best times to go. It’s quieter, easier to park, and you can enjoy beach walks, bike rides, and casual seafood spots without peak-season crowds.
Personally, I would recommend you not try to do everything. Stick to the area you’re in, and explore all it has to offer. It’s simple, classic, and just far enough to feel like a getaway.
The Berkshires (1.5 to 2 hours)
If your family needs a reset instead of a rush, head west. The Berkshires offer fresh air, hiking, small-town charm, and slower mornings. It’s a great balance of outdoor adventure and low-key exploring.
This getaway is perfect for families who want nature, space, and a break from busy schedules. Definitely remember to pack layers, mornings and evenings are still chilly.
Newport, Rhode Island (about 1.5 hours)
Newport feels like a true mini vacation without the long drive. You get beaches, walkable downtown streets, great food, and beautiful coastal views, all in one place. Walk part of the Cliff Walk, grab a lobster roll, and let the kids run on the beach.
North Shore (1.5 to 2 hours)
Singing Beach? Wingaersheek? Rockport and Gloucester give you that same coastal feel with charming shops, beaches, and scenic drives, and it often comes with a little less congestion.
This trip is perfect for a relaxed day trip that can easily turn into an overnight. Bring some sneakers! These towns are great for walking.
Southern Maine (right at the 2-hour mark)
If you’re willing to stretch just a little, Maine is worth it.
Ogunquit, York, and Kennebunkport offer beautiful coastal views, great food, and a slightly more relaxed vibe than some Massachusetts beaches.
Sturbridge + Local Escape (local to 45 minutes)
Not every getaway needs a long drive. If your weekend is already busy, staying local can still feel special. Think Old Sturbridge Village, Tower Hill, or even a simple lake day. This can be great with young kids, last-minute plans, or low-key weekends.
Mom tip: Sometimes less travel = more actual enjoyment
At the end of the day…
You don’t need a big trip to make Memorial Day weekend feel like the kick-off to summer.
Sometimes it’s as simple as getting the kids sandy and tired, or a spontaneous ice cream stop. It’s when the kiddos are sleepy, sun-kissed, and happy. That’s the start of summer.
