5 Practical Tips to Reset Digital Habits after Winter Break

0

Winter Break, and winter in general, can be a time for catching up on your favorite holiday movies and snuggling with some warm tea, but when is the screen time too much? Family time and self-care time can be spent doing other activities. Take that time to reset your mind and body from the digital world. You can make goals for yourself for each of the categories and adjust the goals as needed.

Here are 5 practical tips to reset digital habits for your mental clarity this winter:

1. Get outside

Getting outside is important for your mental and physical health. It can be for a walk, going for a nature hike, or trying a new sport. I understand that it is cold, icy, snowy, and the weather is unpredictable in a lot of parts of the country, but even 10 minutes with lots of layers can help. You can always take layers off if you get too warm.

2. Play a game

My family loves playing games, and there are so many options out there, from cards to board games and trivia games. One of our favorite games, Googly Eyes, has resulted in so many laughs every time we have played.

3. Get involved with a puzzle or craft

Doing crafts and puzzles allows for your “creative brain” to really be turned on. I feel like I get to use my “creative brain” at work, but that is still on computer platforms and digital media. Get your hands involved in the project!

4. Use other senses

Instead of using your eyes for digital consumption, use your other senses to explore different options. You can listen to audiobooks, podcasts, or music. Have a healthy snack and drink some water. Find a fun recipe to try with your family, then taste it afterward.

5. Set a timer or schedule

If scrolling on social media or watching your favorite show is how you decompress after a long day, then set a timer on your phone to allow yourself an hour with the screen time. After the hour is complete, move on to another activity, or go to bed early. I am sure that your body won’t mind the extra sleep, especially since getting enough sleep is hard for a lot of parents. You can also choose a specific day or days to be “screen-free,” where you disconnect from the electronics…and focus on conversation. If you decide to try this option, consider starting with a little at a time and working your way up.

These tips are just some of the alternatives to screen time that you can try. Of course, there are many other things to do to occupy your time, whether it is going out to socialize with a friend or date night, or coming up with your own screen-free ideas. If you are having a hard time figuring out where to start, go to your local library for many of these options. Libraries often have sports equipment, baking pans, puzzles, games, and more that you can borrow. They even host events and offer other family-friendly resources. Make sure to acknowledge your wins when you accomplish your goals.

I hope that you enjoy your digital detox, mental reset, and deeper connections with your family and friends.
