Fall is my absolute favorite season. The crisp, cool mornings, a hot fall-flavored coffee, and sweaters, love sweaters, and time to pack away my flip-flops and pull out those UGG boots. This fall season is the perfect time to hop in the car for some scenic drives to some of the coziest and charming Massachusetts towns. Now let’s grab that sweater and hop in the car to visit one of these charming Massachusetts towns this fall.
Northampton, MA
Hop on the Pike and head west. I went to college in Springfield and thoroughly enjoyed exploring Western Mass when I lived out there. When my husband and I were long-distance dating, he would drive out and pick me up from campus, and we often found ourselves in Northampton for the day. You can find safe hiking and biking trails for your family here. We loved eating at the Northampton Brewery when we visited decades ago, and they are still there (with a small kids menu). If you head there without the kids, definitely have a date at The Tunnel Bar.
Fall is a very popular time in Western Mass because of the vibrant foliage and rolling hills, so plan accordingly. Some other things to do when you are out there: head over to Holyoke to see the dinosaur footprints and Mount Tom State Reservation, or Springfield to go to the Big E (if you haven’t been, it is a MUST!).
Concord, MA
I learned about Lexington and Concord in history class growing up, but never had the opportunity to go until a few years ago when I visited Annie, Owner/CEO of Central Mass Mom. Concord is so rich in history, and during the fall, the foliage is the icing on the cake. First things first, we had to go visit the Minute Man National Historical Park and Old North Bridge. There are great restaurants in the area, but while visiting with Annie, we headed to Liberty at the Colonial Inn for the spooky atmosphere. Our next trip will definitely include Sleepy Hollow Cemetery and Walden Pond State Reservation.
Sturbridge, MA
The fall is the perfect time to visit Old Stubridge Village. Beginning at dusk on Friday-Sundays from October 10-26, 2025, you can attend their Phantoms by Firelight event. Grab a delicious coffee at the Sturbridge Coffee Shop or the Saw Dust Coffee House before heading to the Leadmine Trails for a family-friendly hike. Finish the day by grabbing dessert at the Publick House before heading home.
Rutland & Oakham, MA
I had to wrap these two towns together because last spring we stayed for a weekend at Pine Acres Family Camping Resort in Oakham (read all about the visit here). While we were there, we explored Rutland and Oakham. I know that these towns would be more vibrant because of their opportunities to view fall foliage up close. One of our favorite spots was Rutland State Park. We dove into the deep history nestled within the park, where you can find the ruins of an old prison complex.

If you want more walking, you can head a few minutes down the road to Moore State Park in Paxton. Lastly, grab delicious wine, cider, and maple syrup from our friends at Agronomy Farm Vineyard.
Cape Cod, MA
I love the Cape during the fall. The crowds are fewer, some restaurants are year-round, and if you are lucky, the weather can still be warm in early Fall. Who doesn’t love a crisp fall morning walking on the beach? In Sandwich, ride your bike on the Cape Cod Rail Trail, grab a coffee at Snowy Owl Cafe & Roastery, or visit the Heritage Museums & Gardens (Open until 10/19/2025). In Brewster, catch a sunset at Breakwater Beach, see the windmill, go for a walk, or play at the playground at Drummer Boy Park.

Also, there is an abundance of fall festivals to attend on the Cape this fall. Take your time driving 6A mid-late October to see the fall foliage. Check out Eastham and Orleans for great sunset views. Tip: Most beaches stop charging for parking after Labor Day.
Now that I have shared some of my favorites, what are some of your favorite charming towns to visit this fall in Massachusetts?
