I love a free activity and one of the best resources in every town are the libraries. They are contained places for you to go solo with your kids or schedule a play date and meet other moms and kiddos at the library. Here’s a roundup of a few local libraries for you to check out. Most of my visits have been with COVID restrictions and programs were attended with a young toddler.

Shrewsbury Public Library (609 Main St)
Starting with my hometown Library, we love going to the Shrewsbury Library! It’s modern and has ample parking in downtown Shrewsbury. The library is right across from the town green with a scenic gazebo which is perfect for a picnic or to bring over some books to read in the park! The children’s area is on the bottom floor and very open. There are some great reading nooks and cozy chairs. The best part of SPL is the outdoor/patio space. It’s gated in and has a covering with some chairs to sit. There are also some mosaics and statues for conversation points with your kids. SPL offers great weekday programming for kids of all ages and also has occasional weekend events!
Northborough Free Library (34 Main St)
The Northborough library is located right near downtown Northborough right on Route 20. Use Patty Lane to access the free and easy-access parking lot. Northborough’s bottom floor is the children’s area and this section is one of the most engaging and interactive in the area, easily my favorite library. There are some great reading/playing nooks and they even have these cute houses/structures that my son loves to play in.
Northborough is also one of my favorites because of their robust calendar or programming. They have consistently had zoom programs and take-home kits throughout the pandemic as well as a great variety of in-person events during the week and on weekends! As a full-time working parent, libraries often have limited resources on the weekends, but Northborough has great offerings for kids. While you’re here, make sure you visit C’est La Vie, a unique and yummy restaurant right next door.
Beaman Library, West Boylston (Beaman Library, 8 Newton St)
West Boylston Library has a really unique children’s area. Their programming is great but the book selection and open play and reading area is what makes Beaman so great! Located on the top floor of the library, there is a bright and open room ready for your kiddos to explore books, paired with some toys and other stations to let your little’s imagination take over! Beaman is also close to the town common to have your snacks/lunch or let the kids run around after your trip!
Westborough Public Library (55 W Main St)
The children’s area at the Westborough Library is a little dated, but they offer GREAT programs! Craft kits are typically available outside the library to grab and go, and they also offered side walk chalk outside the entrance in warmer months. A nice way to burn some energy for your kiddos before or after you go in. I love the location of this library, Westborough center is bustling and quintessential New England. You have options for lunch, coffee or shopping during the trip out, and it’s easy to park! Bonus is that there are some great tables, benches and chairs on the lawn of this picturesque building for you to sit and enjoy your new reads.
