Flip the Script: A Mindset Reset This Mental Health Awareness Month

0

Post-it note on a mirror with a flip-the-script mantra for mental health. In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month this May, I wanted to share a concept that I’ve been loving and practicing this year as a way to anchor yourself in the present moment the moment the going gets tough.

The idea is called flipping the script.

Flip-the-script mantras (short, uplifting and easy to recall phrases/sentences) help shift your mindset when negative thoughts start to creep in. Instead of getting stuck in “I can’t,” they gently guide you toward more empowering, action-focused thinking. In short, they turn everyday challenges into opportunities to grow, adapt, and keep moving forward.

All it really requires of you is the self-awareness in that very moment to:
1. pause
2. get centered
3. and, make the choice to change your thought.

Still not sure where to start? Try these below examples on for size. (I suggest saying them aloud to see which resonate most and feel the most positive knowing the life you’re currently living and the thought patterns that pop up. From there, write the flip-the-script mantra down on a small post-it, and place it in a spot you’ll see frequently.)

Mantras to move forward:

Change is hard. > Change is possible.

I have to do this. > I get to do this.

Why is this happening to me? > What is this teaching me?

I can’t do this. > I’ve survived every hard day thus far.

I give up. > This isn’t how it ends.

I don’t have the time. > I choose to make the time.

I hate my body > I’m learning to appreciate what my body does for me.

If you like the idea of this, it’s possible to create your own, more-fitting scripts. Think about what you’re currently working on, and try writing out a few, more positive alternatives!

This May, prioritize your mental well-being, especially as a busy mom keeping little ones, a home, a job, and much more up and running. You deserve to feel good — and one big step to getting there is flipping that daily, internal dialogue that only you hear.
