Introducing someone to skiing is one of the most rewarding things you can do—there’s nothing quite like watching a friend or family member discover the thrill of gliding down a mountain for the first time. Whether you’re a seasoned skier helping a newbie find their legs or a beginner yourself looking for the perfect place to learn, New England is packed with accessible mountains that make day trips and weekend getaways a breeze.
Here’s your guide to planning fun and stress-free family ski trips, ranging all over New England from easy-to-get-to get to slopes to destination-worthy weekend mountains:
Perfect for a Day Trip
In the heart of Central Mass, Ski Ward is a great first stop for new skiers. It’s small, approachable, and designed for learning. The beginner trails are gentle and well-maintained, and the compact layout makes it easy to keep track of everyone.
Keep in mind! Their beginner packages include rentals and lessons, making it super easy to just show up and start learning. My family likes to stay here for 2-4 hours and have some hot cocoa by the fireplace!
Nashoba Valley (Westford, MA)
Nashoba is another excellent choice for a quick day trip. With a bit more terrain, including several dedicated beginner areas, it’s a fantastic place to build confidence without feeling overwhelmed. The vibe is relaxed, but there are a few more challenging trails. My kids love to watch the stars when night skiing here!
Wachusett Mountain (Princeton, MA)
Wachusett is the crown jewel of day-trip skiing in Massachusetts. With a mix of beginner, intermediate, and advanced trails, it’s perfect if you’re skiing with a group of mixed abilities. Beginners will love trails like Monadnock and Look Mom, while more experienced skiers can venture off to Conifer or Smith Walton.
Perfect for a Weekend Trip
Sunday River (Newry, ME)
If you’re planning a weekend getaway, Sunday River is one of the best destinations for new skiers — hands down. Despite its massive size (8 peaks!), the resort is extremely beginner-friendly.
Look for South Ridge, home to some of the best learning terrain and the wonderful Learn to Ski & Ride program. Once you’ve found your balance, you can still explore much of the mountain thanks to wide, mellow trails that span all eight peaks. All three lodges have buses around the resort, and two are ski-in/ski-out if you are ready for their adjacent trails!
Gunstock Mountain Resort (Gilford, NH)
Gunstock is a smaller mountain, but that’s part of what makes it so great for beginners. It has an intimate, welcoming feel—perfect for first-timers. The ski school offers excellent 1:1 lessons, and the staff are particularly patient with those brand new to the sport.
Trails like Blundersmoke and Lower Recoil offer great beginner-friendly terrain with scenic views of Lake Winnipesaukee.
Killington (Killington, VT)
For those looking to take the next step, Killington offers a great challenge. While it’s known as “The Beast of the East” for a reason, it also has a wide range of beginner trails, especially around the Snowshed and Ramshead areas. This is a great place to go when you’re ready to move beyond the basics and experience a bigger mountain vibe. You’ll find longer runs, varied terrain, and plenty of green cruisers to explore.
Tips for Skiing with Beginners
Start small. Choose a smaller mountain or base area for your first few trips. Avoid steep or crowded trails early on. Rent at the mountain unless you want to commit to multiple days on the slopes. On-site rentals are easier for adjusting gear or swapping sizes. Book lessons. Even a 1-hour beginner lesson can make a huge difference in confidence and safety. Take breaks. New skiers tire quickly—plan for warm-up breaks, snacks, and hydration.
Ready, set, SNOW!
Whether you’re introducing a friend to skiing or planning a family snow day, New England is full of welcoming mountains for some fun! There’s no shortage of places to learn, laugh, and make some turns. Grab your snowpants, rent or buy a ski helmet, and let’s ski!
