Mother’s Day is a time to honor the moms and mother figures in your life. If you haven’t noticed from my other posts, crafts and DIY gifts are my jam. Whenever a holiday or birthday comes about, I think of cute little things my kids can create for those special people in our lives. When we started doing it, I tried to boil the ocean and make things that would stress me and the kids out. I am reminded of the saying of my dear friend Mac, who always said, ‘Why do hard what you can do easy?’ Once I started living that mantra, this got way more enjoyable for me and them. This Mother’s Day, why not consider creating something truly unique and made with love?
I’ve compiled a list of DIY gift ideas for moms in your life that offer a wonderful way to show them just how much you care through a handmade gesture:
Painted pots with a plant or seeds
You can find little pots to do this at any local garden center or the big box stores like Home Depot or Lowe’s. I also enjoy watching the seeds each of my kids selects for their pots. We use acrylic paint, and I let the kids pick their colors and go to town making whatever they like for the design (note: do not do this in clothes you care about or if you do, make sure you put a smock over them as acrylic paint does not come out of clothes). Once those dry, you can have your kids fill with soil and plant their seeds. If you won’t be delivering these right away, remember to water your seeds and make sure they are in a well-lit area.
Handprint or hand-drawn flowers
What is cuter than a little handmade flower or your little budding artist’s hand-drawn flowers? If you ask me, nothing. You can even go a step further and put a little poem with it and laminate it so it can be a forever keepsake.
Lego flowers
I love fresh-cut flowers, but they do not last very long. My oldest loves Legos so much that he has bought the flower kit and put the flowers into a little mason jar vase to give to me. With two cats at home, it is the only way we can have some of my favorite flower varieties. A few of my favorites are below, and these would be great for your older elementary school kiddo:
DIY gift basket of her favorite things
Moms wear a lot of hats day to day. What better way to honor her on Mother’s Day than a basket of her favorites?
- Is there a favorite treat that she likes? If you have the recipe, you can whip it up or buy it from her favorite bakery. If you want to make it feel extra special, put it in a special bag or box.
- Does she have a favorite lip balm or lipstick she likes to wear? +
- How about socks?
- A book she has been eyeing at the bookstore?
This basket doesn’t have to be elaborate and can be easily put together with a lovely basket from TJ Maxx or Home Goods. You can even add a little gift card to her favorite coffee shop (ahem, Kenneally Family Littletown Coffee) so she can treat herself on those days that she doesn’t have time to make one at home.
Give her a coupon book for things
Think like a monopoly and give her a book of “get out of jail free cards,” but the mom edition. Something’s like a night off from doing the dishes, a night off from cooking, a night off from bedtime, a night to pick the show or movie watched, etc., etc. I know that there are days at home with my family that I would jump at any of these.
At the end of the day, no matter if you take any of these suggestions or do something completely different, the day is to celebrate the moms in your life. Each day, these moms are putting their heart and soul into their family and deserve to be celebrated for that. To all the wonderful moms out there, I hope you have a wonderful Mother’s Day filled with love, laughter, and your favorite people who love you the most.
