Every year, my family takes a trip to Western NY to see our extended family. I dread these (at least) 7-hour rides every time…then we have a nice time, adventuring and visiting…and then have to drive (at least) 7 hours back home. This year, we ended our trip in Canada, which made the 7-hour ride home more like 9 hours. We find ourselves preparing for this trip weeks in advance to ensure that we have toys, activities, and of course, snacks for the road, since these long rides can be a challenge for the kiddos.
Stickers, Colorforms, and Window Clings
You can make the time when traveling pass by using stickers, colorforms, or window clings. These can be fun for toddlers and even older kids. My son is 9 and still likes to be creative with different sets of colorforms. Felt boards are clean and easy. And…Etch-a-Sketch is a classic!
Crafts and Games
There are so many crafts and games that can consume time while on your car ride adventure. Different fidgets and coloring/drawing pads, with washable markers, colored pencils, or stamps, can be fun and imaginative for kids of all ages. Crayons can melt, so avoid those. Scratch art paper is a huge hit with my son. Using a baking sheet as a magnetic surface can allow for play with magnets or magnetic tiles.
We like to play I-Spy and the “Alphabet Game,” where you look for all of the letters and numbers on signs, license plates, and bumper stickers. You can also find license plates that are from other states that you may not have seen before.
Car BINGO can keep the kids focused and distracted on looking for certain items like trees, stop signs, farms, trucks, train tracks, etc. You can find Car BINGO cards on Amazon, or you can create your own.
Some rest areas have grass and even playgrounds to release some of the stored energy. Packing a ball, frisbee, and bubbles is great for stretch time at those pit-stops and at your final destination.
Books and Music
Books can pass the time for all, though that may not be for everyone if you can’t read in the car. My son loves reading, doing hidden pictures, mazes, and word searches. Writing in a journal about your adventures can be a lifelong keepsake. If reading in the car is not your thing, you can listen to audiobooks, podcasts, or music. Upbeat music might bring out some new dance moves. You can even reminisce with your favorite childhood songs.
Dolls, “Dudes,” and Cars, Oh My
My son always gets excited about the “dudes” and cars that he wants to take on vacation. For this trip, he enjoyed his Buzz and Woody, as well as several Monster trucks. My niece had her princesses and dolls. These are easy to hold, and they can “look” out the window, too.
Snacks
Snacks and drinks are always a staple for us while traveling. We enjoy veggies and crackers (or chips) with hummus and cheese sticks. Consider making your own trail mix with your child’s favorites. Don’t forget your drinks, especially water! Tip: Watermelon is a great way to stay hydrated on the warm rides.
Take a New Route
Taking a new route, especially if there is traffic, can keep things fresh for everyone. You may find a new scenic view, picnic spot, playground, or interesting shop or restaurant.
Relaxing
To us, relaxing in the car is one of the most essential components of traveling. Our relaxing time can be listening to soft music, looking out the window, meditating, and even taking a nap. Sleeping, in my opinion, makes time go by the fastest. I remember traveling from Massachusetts to Florida as a kid, and sleeping a lot, and time would go quickly.
Don’t forget tissues, wipes, and a small bag for trash. I hope that you enjoy these tips and tricks for car ride activities when you go on your next adventure. Safe travels!
